Proximity

An interactive installation subtly addressing the theme of exclusion. When approached, phonograph-inspired shapes -created by 3D printing on origami paper- respond by withdrawing and closing.

The development

S

01. Initial Movement Tests

Investigating and experimenting with various methodologies and movement mechanisms, including air pumps, nitinol—a metal that morphs when heated—and origami, which ultimately became our focus.

02. Developing Final Mechanism

For the final mechanism, we 3D printed a pattern on origami paper to form the folds, and 3D printed a mechanical claw to facilitate the movement.

03. Electronics + Build

To bring the installation together, we incorporated distance sensing with a Kinect, wired all the components, and designed the movement and placement of the phonographs to improve the user experience.
